EQAs for Histo/Surgical Pathology are of two types, one for diagnosis/efficacy of reporting by circulating sets of slides amongst Pathologists and collating their diagnoses; and second, for testing the working of the laboratory by testing that labs processing, staining and Quality assurance protocols. We are starting with the latter, i.e. the technical component of the programme. Under this we will be sending a tissue specimen which will be processed, cut and stained at the participating laboratories. The final slide/s and block will be posted back to AIIMS, and will be reviewed by a panel of pathologists. Comments regarding the quality of block, slides & staining will be communicated to the concerned laboratories for further quality improvement. The charges at present are Rs.1000/- (Rupees One Thousand only) per year. Cheques / Demand Drafts to be made in the name of The Director, AIIMS and payable at New Delhi. All communications may be sent to the address below.
Dated: 2nd January 2015 First Specimen of the Fourth round (for the Year 2015) from histopatheqas@gmail.com Dear Colleagues,Happy New Year.
We are at the end of the third cycle of Histopath EQAS, and are posting the first specimen tissue of the fourth round, to be processed, sectioned and stained. Clinical History:
12-year male presented with painful swelling at the lower end of femur. X-ray revealed a lytic lesion with reactive new bone formation and extension into the soft tissues. (Hint: This specimen possibly contains bone, so you would have to decide whether decal is needed or not!) We will soon be posting the certificates to all who participated in the 2013-14 cycle. Please ensure that your CORRECT e mail address is available with Mr Arora/Ms Bimla. Also, please ensure that the name of your Lab and of the person representing it (could be owner, nominee or any other) is correct, as this will be written in your certificate, and further corrections/changes to the certificate will be separately chargeable. Please note that while we are posting tissue to all of last year’s participants, we will include in the fourth cycle, and study the slides and post results for only those participants who send in the payment for the 4th cycle of 2015 by the 31st of January, 2015. We are going to try and ensure that, from now onwards, we follow the calendar year for a cycle. This implies that the fourth cycle will be from 1st January to 31st December, 2015. I also take this opportunity to welcome on board Dr Shipra Agarwal and Dr Seema Kaushal, both Assistant Professors in this department, who will also be part of the AIIMS Histopath EQAS team.    Immunohistochemistry ILQA program
Conducted by QcMarkQC mark is interlaboratory quality assessment scheme to promote quality immunohistochemistry. The programme measures staining quality as final outcome to assess techniques used and reagents employed. It tries to provide recommendation for improvement and give optimum protocol. The program derives its basis from the cases received at Baroda Clinical Laboratory. They are worked-up primarily for the diagnostic purpose and quality check. Before sending the cases, they are reviewed for major technicalities including fixation and adequacy of representativeness of the tissue for the marker in question. The cases are analyzed thoroughly keeping all the technical aspects of staining in view. The results are released with optimal, good, borderline or poor scores for final outcome, while the individual steps are commented upon where required. Whenever applicable, they are compared with the peer to give an idea about prevalent standards. Suggestions are provided where necessary. Best protocols are published on the site. The program aims at improvement in quality standards. The laboratory can request return of their stained sections to revisit the staining and learn. If they wish to re-check the amended protocol, fresh sections are provided. They are reassessed in the reassessment runs. For the first year, two modules are being offered: General module for assorted markers and Breast module for ER,PR and Her-2 testing. Four markers are offered in each of the three runs in a cycle (year), so covering total 12 markers in a year for general module. The breast module repeats ER, PR and Her in every run (each marker gets tested thrice in a year). The Cycle 1 is already going on. One can enroll any point of time. The prospective Runs shall be offered to the participants. Visit www.QcMark.org for further details.

Inaugural CME in Electron Microscopy : Basics, Applications and Advances Organised by Department of Pathology, King George’s Medical University, Lucknow Date: November 29th, 2015
Venue: Kalam Center, King George’s Medical University, Lucknow The history of electron microscopy dates back to 1931, when Max Knoll constructed the first prototype electron microscope that was capable of four hundred times magnification. Since then the technology has dramatically evolved resulting in two million times magnification in both 2D and 3D views presently. The greatest advantage of this revolution has been to life sciences, where it has become possible now to analyze at the ultrastructural level resulting in better understanding of the underlying pathology. The theme of the present conference “Basics, Applications and Advances” aims at addressing all the arenas in electron microscopy in a comprehensive manner. For this event, renowned speakers from across the country have happily agreed to share their knowledge and experiences with us. Download Brochure HERE Contact Info: Dr. Atin Singhai
